Meditation Cushions Made From Textiles That Already Exist

Create a little more space to slow down, reconnect and reroot.

Meditation is one of those simple practices that can give us a chance to pause, breathe and reconnect with ourselves.

That's where ReRooted by Earth Warrior began.

We wanted to create pieces that support those quiet moments while staying connected to the work we already do at Earth Warrior: finding new purposes for textiles that would otherwise be discarded.

Our meditation cushions bring those two ideas together.

What are Earth Warrior meditation cushions made from?

Our meditation cushions are made entirely from textiles that already exist.

The outer cushion is made from upcycled upholstery samples and roll ends from manufacturers who no longer need the fabric. These are beautiful, durable fabrics that have already been produced but no longer have a purpose.

Inside the cushion is another layer of upcycling.

The inner form is made from upcycled fabric signs and canvases, and then we fill the cushion with manufacturing scraps and shredded corporate uniforms that are too damaged to be turned into other products.

Instead of sending those small pieces of textile waste away, we use them as the filling that gives the cushion its weight, density and support.

From textile waste to a place to pause

The materials used in each cushion have already travelled a different path before they reach our studio.

Some come from manufacturers. Some come from our corporate textile recycling partners. Some are materials that have simply reached the end of their original purpose.

We bring them into the studio and look at what they can become.

For our meditation cushions, that means turning upholstery fabrics into the outer cover, reclaimed textiles into the inner form and smaller scraps that can't be used elsewhere into the filling.

The result is something designed to help you slow down, made from materials that were once headed in a very different direction.

How much textile waste does one cushion divert?

Our meditation cushions are dense and substantial.

On average, each cushion diverts approximately 8–12 pounds of textile waste from disposal.

That's a lot of material inside one cushion.

And it's material that might otherwise have been difficult to find another use for, particularly the small manufacturing scraps and damaged uniforms we use as filling.

What does the cushion feel like?

These cushions are supportive, dense and squishy.

Personally, I like that they have some firmness to them. They're soft enough to be comfortable, but they don't collapse underneath you.

When I'm sitting for meditation, I want to feel supported rather than constantly adjusting my position because the cushion has flattened beneath me.

The density gives the cushion structure while still giving you that comfortable feeling of settling into your seat.

Why use a meditation cushion?

Sitting directly on the floor can work, but I personally love having a little extra support underneath me.

I find the cushion helps support my lower back and gives my hips a more comfortable position when I'm meditating. It also helps me maintain a straighter posture while I'm sitting.

For me, the cushion becomes part of the ritual.

I sit down, get comfortable and have a physical reminder that this is time to slow down.

You don't have to meditate to use one

While they're designed with meditation in mind, you don't have to be a meditator to enjoy one.

They make comfortable floor seating when friends or family come over, and they're handy to have around for reading, stretching or creating a cozy little space on the floor.

You can keep one beside your favourite chair, bring it into your yoga space or simply leave it somewhere that invites you to sit down for a while.

Sometimes having a comfortable place to sit is enough of a reason.

How do you clean a meditation cushion?

Each cushion has an invisible zipper so you can remove the outer cover when it needs a wash.

Most covers can go into the washing machine and then into the dryer on low, or you can hang them to dry.

Because we're working with a variety of upcycled fabrics, there are a small number of cushions that require hand washing. If a particular cushion needs special care, we'll clearly indicate that in the individual product listing.

That way, you know exactly how to care for the one you're bringing home.

Why ReRooted?

Meditation can be a way to reground ourselves. To slow down enough to notice where we are, how we're feeling and what we need.

The name ReRooted comes from that feeling of reconnecting with ourselves and with the earth around us.We wanted to create a collection that brought together personal wellbeing and our work with textile waste.

Because caring for ourselves and caring for the planet don't have to be separate things. A few quiet minutes on a meditation cushion won't solve everything. But it can give you a place to pause. And sometimes that's where a new thought, a deeper breath or a little more connection begins.

Why choose an upcycled meditation cushion?

When you purchase a ReRooted meditation cushion, you're supporting more than the product itself.

You're supporting our mission at Earth Warrior to create a world without waste.

The cushion you're sitting on is made from materials that already existed. The upholstery fabric was already manufactured. The signs and canvases already had a previous purpose. The scraps and damaged uniforms had reached the point where they couldn't easily be used for something else. We found another possibility for them. Now they get to support something completely different: your time to slow down, reconnect and reroot.

Your wellbeing. A little more time to pause. And 8–12 pounds of textiles given another purpose.
